An incredible tradition of rugby! Graeme is back on Lower Field today for another epic clash with St Andrew’s College!

This year marks 148 years of derby rugby between Graeme College and St Andrew’s College; what a legacy!

In 2022, St Andrew’s College celebrated the 125th anniversary of rugby on Lower Field, a testament to the rich history of the sport at the school.

The first recorded rugby match between Graeme and St Andrew’s took place on April 13, 1878, with Graeme College edging out a narrow victory. This fixture is one of the earliest documented schoolboy rugby matches in South Africa, cementing its place in the country’s rugby heritage.

St Andrew’s College (founded in 1855) is the 6th oldest school in South Africa, while Graeme College (founded in 1873) ranks 22nd oldest. The rivalry between these two schools has stood the test of time and remains a significant part of both institutions’ histories.
