A Saturday afternoon of football at Junor Field

Junor Field was buzzing on Saturday afternoon as Siyaphakama Soccer Academy, under the tutelage of Old Boy Sino Stamper, travelled down from the Windy City to take on our U14/15, 2nd and 1st teams in three exciting fixtures.

The U14/15 side set the tone for what would be an afternoon filled with drama and draws. Their match ended all square at 2–2, setting the stage for another closely contested encounter.

The 2nd team match followed a similar script, with neither side able to be separated after the final whistle, the score once again reading 2–2. With the game still level, the decision was made to settle it from the penalty spot. Unfortunately, Graeme fell short, losing the shootout 4–2 and handing the visitors the win.

The 1st team fixture proved to be the game of the day, with spectators describing it as a true game of two halves. The visitors dominated the opening 45 minutes, heading into the halftime break with a commanding 5–0 lead.

But there must have been something in the Grahamstown water at halftime, because a completely different Graeme side emerged for the second half.

The comeback was sparked by Onesimo Oliphant, who came on just five minutes after the restart and went on to score a sensational second-half hat-trick. Fellow striker Athenkosi Mukume was not about to let him have all the fun, adding a brace of his own as Graeme turned the game on its head and took the score to 6–5.

With what proved to be the final kick of the game, Graeme found a dramatic late equaliser to make it 6–6 and send the match to penalties.

Even from the spot, there was very little to separate the two teams. The shootout went all the way to the ninth penalty, where Graeme were unfortunately unable to convert, eventually losing 9–8 and handing the spoils to Siyaphakama.
